This beaut is one of the few pocketable Android-based PMPs available today, offering up a gorgeous 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchpanel (800 x 480), dedicated media controls along the edges, Android 2.1, WiFi, 1080p video output, a built-in microphone and a battery good for up to 21 hours of use.
As with every other Cowon player, this one also supports every file format ever conceived, including FLAC, APE and OGG — three that the audiophiles in attendance will definitely recognize.
The real question here is simple: does having Android on a non-connected (cellular, anyway) device really do you much good, and moreover, is it really worth the $357.99 asking price? We’ll discuss these points and more in our full review just after the break.

Cowon has really nailed the design here. We’ve always been fans of the company’s aesthetics, and the trend continues here. The unboxing experience is one of the best around, and the D3 itself is just lovely to hold. It’s light, slim and pocketable, yet intensely rigid and solid. There’s nary a hint of low-quality here; everything from the tough-as-nails capacitive touchscreen to the stiff, soft-touch back is just marvelous to hold and admire. We also can’t help but applaud the company for tossing in a few extra physical buttons along the right edge.

Aside from the conventional volume rocker, you’ll also get a track forward, track backward and a play / pause button, all of which can be toggled from your pocket without having to activate the display. Super handy, for obvious reasons.

Labels, artist create enhanced albums for iPad

As noted by The New York Times, numerous music labels and artists have begun creating iPad-specific versions of albums, allowing greater interactivity and enhanced features.

One album profiled was released by EMI last week: “Until One” by Swedish House Mafia. Selling for $9.99, it comes with documentary video scenes, a large photo gallery, notes from the band, and is arranged like a coffee table book.

The goal is to preserve the value of complete albums, as record labels struggle with lost revenue from sales of single tracks. Universal Music Group has teamed up with Eagle Rock Entertainment to bring classic albums, like “Nevermind” by Nirvana, to the iPad as well.

A similar concept to sell entire albums, iTunes LP, was launched by Apple and record labels on iTunes in September of 2009. iTunes LP content includes and entire album with media rich bonus content, like photos and videos. But iTunes LPs cannot yet be played on the iPad.

In-app purchases come to Android

Google this week announced that the long-awaited in-app billing feature is now available for developers on the Android Market. Applications can now offer users the ability to make purchases from within applications

“In-app Billing gives you more ways to monetize your apps with try-and-buy, virtual goods, upgrades, and other billing models,” said Android development manager Eric Chu.

A number of applications already support in-app billing, including Tap Tap Revenge, Comicx by ComiXology, Gun Bros, Deer Hunter, Challenge HD, and WSOP3.

Google revealed its plans to add in-app payments to the Android Market earlier this year. Chu also revealed that the search giant was “not happy” about the limited number of applications actually being purchased on the Android Market, and saw in-app payments as a way to potentially boost revenue.

Apple first introduced in-app purchases for the iPhone with the release of iOS 3.0 in 2009. Initially, they were restricted to paid “premium” applications, but later that year Apple granted developers the ability to offer in-app purchases in free software.

The new updated version of the open-source operating system offers new Android phones a series of enhancements as well as improved performance. The Motorola Mobile Phones Droid for Verizon will be the first device that will use the new software. Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA will also be selling Android devices this holiday season, but neither carrier has announced a device that will use the updated version of the operating system.

But that doesn’t mean that the Droid will be the only device running the 2.0 software this year. A Google representative said it’s very likely at least one other phone will be introduced that uses the new version of the open source operating system.

One of the features that the updated software has added allows for the integration of multiple social-networking and e-mail accounts into the phone’s contact list. This means that contact and calendar information can be synced with Microsoft Exchange e-mail services and also other Web e-mail accounts, as well as, social-networking sites like Facebook.

The new version of the software has support for Microsoft Exchange, which is a huge deal because it means that corporate users can sync their work e-mail with their phones. A search function was added to the SMS and MMS messaging feature. The software has also been updated to support a camera that includes a built-in flash, digital zoom, scene mode, white balance, color effect, and macro focus.

The new software has also improved the virtual keyboard layout to make it easier to hit the right keys as well as improved the typing speed. The 2.0 version of software supports an enhanced browser that allows users to directly tap the address bar for instant searches and navigation. It allows bookmarks with Web page thumbnails. It offers double-tap zoom. And there is full HTML5 support, which among other things allows for geolocation applications to be developed to provide location information about the device.

Overall the new improvements to the software should make the Android devices operate much faster than the previous generation of software. A Google representative said the software is backwards compatible with older versions of Google Android hardware. But it is up the carriers whether or not they allow users to upgrade their devices to the new operating system. And the carriers will be controlling the timing of these upgrades.

As for the new Android devices coming from Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile, they won’t likely immediately have the Android 2.0 operating system, but it’s likely these devices, along with new Android phones will come with the new version of the OS.

A Sprint representative said that traditionally the company pushes out or allows users to upgrade software when it’s made available.

T-Mobile, which was the first carrier to offer an Android phone, will have four Google Android phones available for the holidays. Two are available today: the original T-Mobile G1, which launched in October of last year, and the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, which went on sale this summer and is available now for 9.99. T-Mobile is adding two more devices to line-up in time for the holidays: the Motorola Cliq which goes on sale November 2, and the Samsung Mobile Phone Behold II, which does not yet have a launch date but will be available before Christmas. http://www.myluxphone.com candy-plm.ltd

Times are changing for Android manufacturers. After taking heat for the increasing fragmentation between Android devices, Google has begun stepping up in 2011 and requiring manufacturers to start adhering to a stricter code of conduct. In response, “a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem,” have been complaining to Business Week and the Justice Department.

Here’s what’s happening:

• Chip and device manufacturers that hope to use Google services and access the Android Market must comply with Google’s rules.
• Android licensees must now adhere to “non-fragmentation clauses,” meaning that modifications to Android handset hardware or user interface (HTC Sense, Motorola Blur, TouchWiz, etc) must be approved by Google’s Android guru, Andy Rubin. This includes monitoring and approval of new app partners for built-in software.
• Google has specifically asked to review tweaks and code from Facebook, which is creating its own Android UI for a Facebook phone of some kind.
• Google has tried to hold up the release of Verizon Android devices that use Microsoft’s Bing search engine.
• Google is playing favorites (more than before), delaying the open source release of Android Honeycomb, but letting choice manufacturers like Motorola, Samsung, and LG access so they can get a head start on the competition. As a result, out of the loop manufacturers like Acer and Dell are being pushed months behind the competition.
• Google may standardize Android on ARM chipsets, leaving Intel in the dust.

Is this right?

Sometimes we forget that Google is a business. We want it to be this pure force for good and openness. While it may have had pure intentions with Android, manufacturers have been taking advantage of Google’s lax nature for the last three years. Unlike Windows and every other platform, Android has always been, and still is a free platform to use. Google gave all of the major manufacturers the ability to compete with Apple’s iPhone at a time when none of them could. This is why Android’s marketshare has sprung from single digits to more than 40 percent in the last year or so.

More control please

Unlike every other operating system, Google has also given handset manufacturers an unprecedented level of control to customize and modify Android, and they have, often to the detriment of the Android experience itself. It can be a very frustrating thing for a user if they buy an Android phone by HTC and learn how to do things one way, then buy a Motorola handset and can’t find many basic menus or functions that they got used to on their last phone.

PCs and Macs never had this problem, and with Windows Phone, Microsoft laid out strict (but fair) requirements on all handset manufacturers, requiring 100 percent compliance. While HTC has created an entire UI experience called Sense on top of Android, its Windows Phone devices are identical to all other manufacturers except for a single “HTC Hub” where their custom software can lie. Time will tell which model is better, but it’s clear that Google needed to do something. In fact, it may not be doing enough.

Here’s what Google should do:

• Require handset manufacturers using Google services to update their handsets in a timely fashion during their lifecycle (one to two years from release). Google releases a new version of Android every six months or so. To maintain a consistent experience, It is important that Google get as many handsets on the new version as possible. If manufacturers choose to modify Android, they must be able to update their custom UI within a few months and issue the update. Or perhaps make more parts of Android off limits, so that updates can occur without affecting custom UI.
• Get updates out of the hands of the carriers. We’ve been railing on Windows Phone for relying on carriers for updates but Android is no better. Somehow, Google needs to take control of Android updates. It’s bad enough that handset manufacturers are involved in Android updates, involving wireless carriers is just asking for trouble. Neither manufacturers or carriers have much incentive to issue updates. Even if it involves hooking my phone to a PC, there should be a way to get relevant updates when they are issued.
• Make the stock version of Android more attractive and with better features. It is hard work to make an operating system, but if Google took some time to ensure that the stock version of Android had the kind of flair HTC adds with its Sense UI, then all manufacturers would benefit. If there weren’t so many obvious ways to improve Android visually, perhaps manufacturers wouldn’t need to do so. Gingerbread and Honeycomb have been steps in the right direction, but there’s no reason why the standard version of Android can’t look as good as any custom version. Get cracking, Google.

Stop playing favorites

While I have defend some of Google’s actions, the company should take a cue from Microsoft and treat all major venders equally. It’s fine to keep creating new “Nexus” devices that show off the power of a new Android version, but it looks bad when partners like Motorola are allowed to release tablets and phones with new software months before the competition can even look at it. That’s not open, and it’s not good.

Takeaway: Hot, new Android devices hit the market almost every week. To help you sort through them all, here’s our list of the 10 best Android smartphones, especially with business users in mind.

Since there are so many Android smartphones on the market now — including both excellent devices and several duds — many people feel overwhelmed when trying to choose one. I get a lot of the “Would you recommend this one or that one” questions as well as plenty of requests to rank my favorites.

As a result, I’ve created a leaderboard of my top Android picks. This is a dangerous task because it is very subjective stuff. The smartphone that is the best fit for you is going to depend heavily on your needs and preferences. But, since I’ve had my paws on virtually all of the Android devices and I’ve written reviews of the best ones, I decided to rank them in terms of the overall quality of the devices. Since my audience is primarily IT and business professionals, I’ve developed this list with them in mind. A list aimed at consumers would certainly look a little different.

I also keep this leaderboard up to date (here’s my final 2010 leaderboard). So, as I review new Android devices in 2011 and decide that they deserve a place on the list, I will add them to the list and bump other phones down or off the list. The are some excellent devices coming soon that will likely join this list — Motorola Droid Bionic, T-Mobile G2x, and LG Revolution, for example — but while I’ve seen pre-release versions of these devices, I’m not going to add them to this list until they are officially available to the public.

Caveat: This ranking is primarily based on US smartphones. In each country/region, the telecom carriers tend to name these devices by different names. In many cases you’ll be able to find a close match between the devices on this list and devices in your area, but not in all cases.

This is the successor to the HTC EVO, which I ranked first on last year’s Android leaderboard. The ThunderBolt is a major upgrade. It gets Verizon’s 4G LTE network over Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network — and that more than doubles its network speeds and capacity. It also sports an upgraded Snapdragon processor with a dedicated GPU, a bump up to 768MB of RAM, an aluminum unibody hardware design (reminiscent of the Google Nexus One and the HTC Desire), and a camera that has the same number of megapixels but takes much nicer photos. Internationally, the HTC Desire HD is very similar to the ThunderBolt.
Arguably, the most exciting new Android smartphone of 2011 is the Motorola Atrix. The phone looks like Clark Kent but acts like Superman. The hardware design isn’t anything special and the MotoBlur UI doesn’t do Android any favors. But, under the hood, the Atrix is running Motorola’s “Webtop” software, which allows the phone to connect to a laptop dock or desktop dock and act like a real PC. Of all the smartphones on this list, the Atrix is the only one that we’re likely to remember its name in five years, because it’s such a watershed device. Five years from now, nearly all high-end smartphones will have this feature. They might even replace corporate desktops in many cases.
Samsung joined the Android ecosystem with a bang in 2010, putting its Galaxy S line of smartphones on lots of different carriers in lots of different form factors. Millions of buyers scooped them up. The first successor to its initial line of Android phones is the Samsung Galaxy S 4G. It’s very similar to last year’s Galaxy S line but it has HSPA+ capability (which T-Mobile dubiously calls “4G”) and a svelte form factor that doesn’t feel quite as placticy as most of last year’s models. Also keep an eye out for the Samsung Galaxy S II.
One of the best Android phones flying under the radar is the HTC Inspire. The form factor is nearly identical to the HTC ThunderBolt — it’s essentially an aluminum unibody version of the HTC EVO. While it doesn’t have quite the punch of the ThunderBolt in terms of speed, it gets pretty close. It runs on AT&T’s HSPA+ network in the US, so it can get up to 5Mbps downloads in the real world. However, while the ThunderBolt costs $249 up front, the Inspire retails for just $99. It’s a terrific bargain at that price. Again, if you’re looking for an international version of this device, check out the HTC Desire HD. And, AT&T customers should also watch for the Samsung Infuse later in 2011.
As I wrote in my review of the Nexus S, it doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor, the Nexus One — the original “Google Phone” — but the Nexus S is still worth a look, especially for Android purists and developers. While HTC built the Nexus One for Google, the Nexus S was built by Samsung and has a similar hardware design as the Galaxy S models (i.e. lots of plastic). However, the Nexus S runs the stock Android OS, was the first phone to get Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and will continue to be one of the first devices (along with the Nexus One) to get the latest Android updates directly from Google. The Nexus S 4G is also coming soon.
This smartphone bears a very strong resemblance to the original Nexus One (a great device that’s no longer for sale) and in the first half of 2010 it was released in Europe and Australia, where it became a popular choice in both markets. It has since spread to other international markets and it became available in the US through regional carrier US Cellular. The Desire has nearly-identical hardware specs to the Nexus One and a very similar, high-quality aluminum unibody that gives it an excellent build quality. The biggest differences are that the Desire has hardware navigation buttons instead of touch-sensitive buttons, an optical touchpad instead of a trackball, includes HTC Sense UI and an FM tuner, but lacks the second microphone for noise cancellation and the pins for a dock connector. Also, keep an eye on the HTC Desire HD (with a larger 4.3-inch screen) and the HTC Desire Z (with a slide-down keyboard).
With Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G drawing much of the attention of the Android world during 2010, after its unveiling at CTIA Wirelesss in March 2010, the response from Motorola and Verizon (the previous darlings of the Android world) was the Droid X. It matched the HTC EVO with a 4.3-inch screen, an 8 megapixel camera, a Micro HDMI port, and mobile hotspot functionality, but it lacked a front-facing camera, 4G connectivity, and the extra polish that HTC puts on Android with its Sense UI. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most capable Android devices available and remains a favorite among many professionals and power users. It will be largely succeeded when the Motorola Droid Bionic arrives in mid-2011.
This version of the Samsung Galaxy S is the one that departed most significantly from the standard form factor. That’s mostly because it integrates a full 53-key slide-down hardware keyboard. But it’s not just any keyboard. With it’s large keys and dedicated row for number keys, it is arguably the best hardware qwerty on any Android device. It also features a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, a zippy 1 GHz Samsung processor, and Sprint’s 4G WiMAX service. You could certainly make a case for ranking this phone higher on the list, especially for business users that are still in love with a hardware keyboard.
The other great option for Android purists is the T-Mobile G2 from HTC. It runs the stock Android OS and is the successor to the T-Mobile G1 (a.k.a. HTC Dream), which you may remember as the Google’s very first Android phone released back in October 2008. The G1 was also one of the worst smartphones ever created, with its clunky, awkward hardware and abysmal Android 1.6 software. Its successor does much better. The G2 has HTC’s aluminum finish, a solid slidedown keyboard with customizable quick keys, and Android 2.2. It doesn’t have the latest hardware, but it does connect to T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network and it’s available at an excellent price (even free, with some promotions). The T-Mobile G2x is also coming mid-2011, but don’t let its name confuse you. It’s built by LG, doesn’t have a hardware keyboard, and is a completely different device.
No Android device has taken aim at business users more directly than the Motorola Droid Pro. The most obvious symbol is the Droid Pro’s hardware keyboard, which effectively emulates the classic BlackBerry keyboard found on devices such as the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Curve. The Droid Pro also integrates enhanced security and management features (such as remote device wipe) that will appeal to larger organizations and their IT departments. These features don’t quite bring Android up to the same level of enterprise readiness as BlackBerry (which offers even stronger encryption, for example), but many companies will likely view it as good enough. While the 3.1-inch screen of the Droid Pro is among the smallest of Android devices, this device will definitely appeal to BlackBerry converts.
